On Friday, 12 December, the CGIL — Italy’s largest trade union — will take to the streets to protest against the Meloni government’s budget law. A general strike has been called in response to an executive that remains deaf to the demands of the world of work. A budget that increases spending on weapons rather than addressing the needs of workers and pensioners who struggle to make ends meet.
The General Secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, explains the reasons that led the union to call the general strike: ‘We want wages to increase — people cannot be poor while working. Wages must be raised, and investment should not go into weapons but into public healthcare, public education, and knowledge. We need to correct a flawed tax system and fight tax evasion. We must affirm a model of society founded on people’s needs.
