경주에 위치한 우양미술관은 2025년 12월 17일부터 2026년 5월 25일까지 영국을 대표하는 작가, '조지프 말로드 윌리엄 터너'의 작품을 한국 최초로 전시한다고 밝혔다. 영국 휘트워스 미술관이 협력하고, 주한 영국대사관의 후원했다.

터너의 탄생 250주년 기념 전시

이번 전시는 터너 탄생 250주년을 기념하는 전시로, 영국 맨체스터 대학교 휘트워스 미술관이 소장한 터너의 명작 수채화 및 유화 원화와 판화 시리즈를 동시에 만나볼 수 있는 좋은 기회다.

무엇보다 터너 판화 작품 세계의 핵심이라 할 수 있는 《리베르 스투디오룸》 시리즈 71점 전체를 1922년 이후 100여년 만에 공개한다는 점이 특별한 전시다. 이번 전시는 세 개의 섹션으로 구성돼, 당대에 비주류였던 풍경화 및 판화의 입지를 끌어 올린 터너의 발자취를 돌아보고, 그것이 동시대 예술에 끼친 영향력을 탐구한다.

또한 실험적인 현대미술작가에게 수여하는 터너 프라이즈의 이름을 딴 작가로서 전통적 관습을 넘어서는 도전정신을 통해 현대미술의 의미와 취지 되새겨 보는 계기가 될 것으로 기대되고 있다.

100년 만에 선보이는 '리베르 스투디어룸'

조지프 말로드 윌리엄 터너(1775~1851)는 19세기부터 지금까지 세대를 넘어 수많은 예술가의 영감을 자극하는 영국의 대표적인 풍경화가다. 이번 전시는 탁월한 작품성에 비해 상대적으로 주목받지 못한 풍경 판화 연작인 《리베르 스투디오룸》을 탐구한다. "연구의 서"라는 뜻의 제목이 붙은 이 연작은 터너의 명성이 절정에 올랐던 1807년부터 1819년 사이에 14회 출판되었다.

터너는 풍경 판화로 자신의 예술에 또 다른 지평을 열고 새로운 관객과 만날 가능성을 엿봤다. 그는 신세대 메조틴트 판화가와 협업하여 판화라는 매체를 예술적으로 한 단계 끌어올리고 변모시켰다. 판화를 제작할 때는 영국과 유럽 각지를 여행하며 직접 그린 풍경 스케치를 바탕으로 삼았다. 터너는 《리베르》 판화를 독립적인 원작으로 여겼다. 실제로 출판된 판화 71점 중 회화 완성작에 기반을 둔 것은 19점에 불과하다.

휘트워스가 다시 《리베르 스투디오룸》을 관객 앞에 선보이는 것은 100년 만에 처음으로, 터너 탄생 250주년을 기념하기 위해 세심하게 기획되었다. 특히, 터너가 출판한 판화 71점을 전부 한자리에 모아 휘트워스가 소장하고 있는 수채화 명작과 나란히 선보인다.

Gyeongju, South Korea – The Wooyang Museum of Contemporary Art announced that it will host the first-ever exhibition in Korea of works by renowned British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner, running from December 17, 2025 to May 25, 2026. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Whitworth Art Gallery of the University of Manchester and supported by the British Embassy in Seoul.

Celebrating Turner’s 250th Anniversary

Marking the 250th anniversary of Turner’s birth, the exhibition offers audiences a rare opportunity to view masterpieces from the Whitworth’s collection, including original watercolors, oil paintings, and print series. A highlight of the show is the complete set of 71 engravings from Turner’s Liber Studiorum, unveiled for the first time in over a century since 1922.

Divided into three sections, the exhibition retraces Turner’s groundbreaking role in elevating landscape painting and printmaking—genres considered marginal at the time—and explores their lasting influence on contemporary art.

The exhibition also reflects on Turner’s legacy as the namesake of the Turner Prize, awarded to experimental contemporary artists. His spirit of challenging tradition is expected to inspire reflection on the meaning and purpose of modern art today.

Liber Studiorum Returns After 100 Years

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) remains one of Britain’s most celebrated landscape painters, whose works have inspired generations of artists. This exhibition focuses on Liber Studiorum (“Book of Studies”), a series of landscape prints published between 1807 and 1819, during the height of Turner’s fame.

Through these prints, Turner sought to expand his artistic horizons and reach new audiences. Collaborating with a new generation of mezzotint engravers, he elevated printmaking into a refined artistic medium. Many of the works were based on sketches Turner made while traveling across Britain and continental Europe. Of the 71 published prints, only 19 were derived from completed paintings, underscoring Turner’s view of the series as independent original works.

The Whitworth’s decision to present the entire Liber Studiorum series alongside its collection of Turner’s watercolors marks the first such display in 100 years, carefully curated to commemorate the artist’s 250th anniversary.

A representative of the Wooyang Museum commented: “This exhibition will allow audiences to appreciate how Turner’s unique use of color and atmosphere in his landscapes is reinterpreted through the medium of print, offering a chance to experience the interplay of line, light and shadow, and space.”
